The secretariat and members work together during the application process doing different jobs.

Secretariat

The secretariat is responsible for tribunal administration.  The secretariat:

  • deals with all telephone and written enquiries
  • deals with the registration of your application
  • notifies you of important stages in the process such as when and where the hearing will take place.

Members

The tribunal chairperson is the judicial lead of ALT Wales. The chairperson is responsible for the members and for tribunal decisions.  The tribunal also has panel members who have knowledge and experience of farming, drainage and landowner matters in Wales.

The chairperson of the tribunal is appointed by the Lord Chancellor and must be a barrister or solicitor of at least seven years' experience. Panel members are also appointed by the Lord Chancellor.  

Tribunal hearings are managed by the chairperson or deputy chairperson, who must also have a legal qualification. They will write decisions, advise of adjournments and set directions where necessary. The hearings are also attended by panel members.
